How do I Apply a CAT Tourniquet?


Applying a tourniquet is a critical emergency skill, and it’s best to be familiar with the process before an actual situation occurs.


Step 1: Become familiar with the Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT). Before an emergency happens, learn its components, including the buckle, windlass rod, clip, strap, and securing band.

Step 2: Place the CAT. Insert the injured limb through the loop of the band and position the tourniquet approximately 2–4 inches above the wound to help control bleeding.

Step 3: Tighten the CAT. Pull the strap tightly and secure it using the Velcro to ensure it stays firmly in place on the limb.

Step 4: Twist and secure the rod. Rotate the windlass rod until the bleeding stops (do not over-rotate), then lock it into the clip. Secure the remaining strap to keep it in position.


If bleeding does not stop, a second tourniquet may be applied 2–4 inches above the first to provide additional pressure and control.


Do CAT Tourniquets Expire? / Can You Reuse CAT Tourniquets?


The Combat Application Tourniquet (CAT) does not typically have a strict expiration date under normal storage conditions. When kept properly in a cool, dry place, it is designed to remain functional for long-term use.


However, if a tourniquet has been deployed in an emergency, it should be replaced immediately and not reused. Even if it appears intact after use, its structural integrity may be compromised after being subjected to high tension and stress.


Environmental conditions can also affect its lifespan. Exposure to extreme heat, direct sunlight, or harsh storage environments may accelerate material degradation over time. While this is generally less of a concern in typical civilian storage conditions, proper care is still recommended to ensure reliability when needed.
